Our Featured Callers and Cuers

Vic Ceder started dancing in 1975 with a teen square dance club where he met his wife Debbie. They started dancing Advanced in 1977 and Challenge shortly thereafter. Vic began calling in 1981.

Vic calls Mainstream through C-4 and has taught classes at all levels from Basic through C-3B. He has called in 31 states and 8 countries other than the United States. He has called at several National Square Dance Conventions, iPAC, the Canadian National Challenge Convention, and several IAGSDC conventions. Vic is a self-taught caller, has taught at the Northern California Callers School and at several GCA Callers Schools, and has conducted several mini calling clinics.

Vic and Debbie are the authors of three definition books, the Ceder Chest series, detailing the calls and concepts from A-1 through C-3B. A software systems engineer, Vic has written several widely-used square dance computer programs, notably the Ceder Square Dance System (CSDS) and the Square Rotation Program (SQROT). Their website, www.ceder.net, is one of the most widely-respected square-dance-related sites on the Internet with an extensive database of callers, cuers, clubs, square dance music information, square dance events, and choreography.

Vic has been a CALLERLAB member since 1989. In 2017, Vic and Debbie received the CALLERLAB Milestone Award for their tireless work on www.ceder.net, CSDS, and SQROT, work that has had broad influence on the square dance activity.

When they are not square dancing, Vic and Debbie enjoy East Coast style swing dancing, contra dancing, and round dancing. Vic enjoys playing ragtime and boogie woogie piano, gardening, and reading French comic books, which he collects. They both enjoy tasting fine, artisan dark chocolate bars which they rate in a database on their website, and have been avid beekeepers for the last five years.

Their daughter, Caitlyn, graduated from U.C. Santa Barbara in June 2017 and is now employed as a Laboratory Animal Technician at their biology department's Animal Resource Center. When she's not working, she enjoys dancing up to C-3A.

Vic has called at Jubilee a number of times past years. Welcome back, Vic and Debbie!

Romney Tannehill's passion for square dancing began as a child at the encouragement of his parents. He transitioned into calling and soon became the club caller for Ozark Whirlers in Eldon, Missouri at the age of 15. Romney continued to call and conduct classes, workshops, and dances in Missouri and nearby states before moving to Southern California in 1993.

Prior to the pandemic, Romney was calling up to 10 times a week for different levels, starting and running weekends, and calling at popular weekends throughout the West, as well as in Missouri. In late 2020, he moved back to his hometown of Eldon, Missouri. He still calls full-time and occasionally travels back to California to call. He retains his joy and enthusiasm for calling for everyone and anyone, always expressing gratitude for square dancing.

Buddy Weaver started calling in 1977 while still in school, living in Honolulu, Hawaii. He is a third generation square dance caller who lives with his family in San Diego, California.

Buddy became an accredited member of CALLERLAB in 1981 and is currently on the Board of Governors. He is active in teaching other callers and has called/conducted seminars in the United States, Japan, and Europe.

Buddy has been active in the square dance recording industry since 1981, with over 300 vocals released. He has consolidated the major square dance labels of Blue Star, Hi Hat, and Rawhide Music into Buddy Weaver Music, copyright holder of the largest square dance music library in the world. BWM produces a weekly podcast dedicated to the perpetuation of square dancing, offering episodes for free listening (streaming) or download.

MaryAnn Callahan and Craig Cowen started dancing together in 1991, and teaching round dancing together in 1992, in Mountain View, California.

MaryAnn originally got involved in square dancing, round dancing, and clogging as a teenager in Medford, Oregon. Upon moving to Northern California, MaryAnn partnered with Craig Cowan for twelve years. After Craig moved to Seattle, MaryAnn danced and choreographed several routines with other instructors. Craig, a third generation square and round dancer, continued to be an active participant in round dancing in Seattle, Washington, and Sandpoint, Idaho.

MaryAnn and Craig refreshed their partnership in 2013. They have been featured cuers at several California, Oregon, Nevada, and Idaho festivals; International Choreographed Ballroom Dance Association (ICBDA) conventions; and the National Square Dance Convention. Based in Northern California, MaryAnn and Craig cue and teach Phases 2 through 6; teach a Phase 3-4 Transition class where students concentrate on proper dance position and execution of figures, and learn to lead/follow in different rhythms; and run a Phase 4-6 Carousel club, Moonlight Dancers, that she and Craig originally started in 1992.

MaryAnn still square dances through C-1, and Craig through A-2, and both MaryAnn and Craig enjoy all types of dancing as much as possible. They are also privileged to work previously with Darryl Lipscomb and currently with Romney Tannehill at McCloud Dance County's A-2 week.

MaryAnn and Craig are active members of ROUNDALAB (participating on several committees); the Northern California Round Dance Teacher's Association (NCRDTA); and the ICBDA. They choreograph routines from Phase 2 to Phase 5.
