From: SCVSDA Jubilee To: jubilee-update@scvsda.org Date: Fri, 21 Sep 2007 11:55:26 -0700 Subject: Jubilee Update: Sessions for Beginners You are probably planning to attend the 51st Jubilee in San Jose next month to enjoy all the great Plus, Advanced, or Challenge dancing. But what about your friends who aren't yet square dancers? This year's Jubilee will once again feature two sessions especially for beginners -- an "Intro to Square Dancing" on Friday evening (12 October) and a full day of "Blast Class" sessions on Sunday (14 October). *** FRIDAY *** Everybody is invited to the Friday evening intro session for free! No experience necessary. Bring friends or family to Jubilee and let them learn about square dancing while you dance in your favorite hall -- or dance with them. Either way, beginners will enjoy dancing to three of the area's Top Ten callers, starting at 7:00pm. No partner needed. All ages welcome. Did your club just start a class? Maybe you know somebody who missed the intro nights? Maybe some of the new class members have friends who they now wish could join them? Let them know about this "second chance" to start square dancing this fall -- many clubs will be happy to do what it takes to let people who attend this intro night catch up and join their class. Special note if you bring your kids: Immediately following the intro will be a Youth Dance session, with alternating Beginner and Plus tips. So kids/teens who start in the Intro session will be able to stay around and dance some more with other youth dancers! *** SUNDAY *** Sunday's Blast Class sessions offer even more! This class is for people who want to get a really fast start on square dancing. The class begins at 10am and runs to 5pm, with two breaks. Participants will learn about 35 calls -- about 1/3 of the way to Plus. No previous experience with square dancing is assumed, but naturally this format works best for quick learners. Dancers who complete this class should be able to join any fall beginner class already in progress without any problem. In past years, students who have already started a class in September have also found this session useful as a way to review what they have learned and get more practice. The cost for this full-day class is just $8 per person. As with the Friday session, dancers can come with or without a partner, and youth dancers are welcome. (Note, however, that parents of younger children should plan to participate in the class with them, and should consider whether the length of this class is appropriate for the age and maturity of each individual child.) And new this year -- one local club has already announced plans to offer continuing blast classes on the following Sundays. These aren't part of Jubilee, but they will also be held in San Jose and will continue from where the Jubilee blast sessions left off. These sessions will cover the rest of the Basic, Mainstream, and Plus calls. So if you know somebody who is interested in square dancing and would like to be dancing Plus by Thanksgiving, the place to start is at Jubilee on Sunday 14 October!
